We’re not talking about folks like J.Cole and Young Jeezy who visited Ferguson and met with the people. We’re talking mainstream artists like Jay Z, Kanye, Drake, Wiz Khalifa, Lil Wayne, or Nicki Minaj.
Many Concerned Black Harvard Alumni have recently gathered in order to express our solidarity in mourning the death of Michael Brown, and commitment to justice for this young man and countless others deprived of essential liberties guaranteed to all Americans.
I’m not asking record companies, radio stations, and TV networks to change their ways. We already know what they’re about. I’m not calling on mainstream artists to use their voices and influence to speak on these issues publicly.
This is when all of the activists, mentors, educators, and students come together.
So now what are you going to do, black people? Because in response to this, you have killed your men and children, raped and emotionally crippled your women, looted your communities and desensitized yourselves to unconditionally trust your own people
As David Banner, Chuck D, and Immortal Technique have spoke about Ferguson I have yet to hear a mainstream rap artist talk about what’s going on. An artist that has so much voice and power whether it be through a song, video, community outreach, or even a tweet.
If a person is beat or killed while being arrested by the police, it’s not a crime. It’s even justifiable because the person being arrested was either “resisting” or “being corrected.”
