Hailing from public housing and poverty in New Jersey, Michael Anderson a/k/a Mike Philson is the poster-child for achieving the impossible, receiving an Ivy League education.

With so many children at a deficit in terms of academics and character building values, the Newark Yoga Movement believes in sharing the valuable “life tools” of yoga with them their educators and caregivers. Through yoga and the power of the breath, these children learn through direct experience how to be more relaxed, more focused, more confident and creative.

There is a lot of controversy around “the N-word.” Especially, given a recent NFL proposal to ban use of “racial slurs” including the word “nigga,” I find it important to enlighten America on my perspective and the sentiment of the vast majority of young Black males I interact with on a deeply personal level.

Racism as we know it was created to justify the economic exploitation of African slave labor. Today, it is a tool designed to pit one economically disenfranchised group against a much larger and even moreso economically disenfranchised population.
